5 Teenagers Who Were Sentenced To Death

The idea of sentencing any character not to mention a child to death has been a arguable trouble that has plagued societies the world over. The age-antique argument of an eye for an eye fixed is at the leading edge for individuals who contend that taking an existence is a honest punishment for committing positive cardinal sins. Opposition to the death penalty, especially for teenagers, argue that it’s miles by no means the function of the state to take a person’s life.

The following is the backstory to 5 teenagers who were sentenced to death before this ruling. The details of their alleged crimes are included, as is as much information as possible as to their backstory. Is it possible to conclude from their stories the legitimacy of the death penalty for children? Do the crimes that have been accused of committing meet the castigation of the end of their life?

1.   Fortune Ferguson – 13 Years Old

Fortune Ferguson was 13-years-old at the time of his death. He had been accused of raping an 8-year-old girl and was charged by the state of Florida and found guilty. He was the youngest person executed in the United States during the 20th century. Ferguson was African-American and is one of many minority children who may have fallen victim to the stigmas and racism of his time. A 13-year-old would be in the 8th grade. The average height for a boy of this age is 60 inches. He would just be starting to experience puberty and his decision-making ability would still widely accepted to be the equivalent of an adolescent. He was put to death by electrocution.

2. James Arcene-10 Years Old

James Arcene is the youngest person sentenced to death in the US. He was charged the death of a Swedish settler in 1872, in Fort Smith, Arkansas. He was Native American, of the Cherokee tribe, and only 10-year-old at the time of the alleged crime. James and his alleged co-conspirator were accused of shooting the victim six times and also crushing his head with a rock. They apparently stole his boots and about 25 cents, as well.  Though he was 10 years old when the crime was committed, the two escaped custody and it took another 13 years for authorities to capture them. In 1885 James was hung for his crimes, at the age of 23.
