A news report had just finished when the bulletin cut back to show Ms Exelby inside the public broadcaster’s Sydney studio not looking at the camera.

She was seen with her head down and fiddling with a pen for a few seconds before realising she was back in the spotlight.

A clearly shocked Ms Exelby, with her eyes wide-open, threw down her pen in a flash and simultaneously let out an audible gasp.

She managed a wry smile after realising she had been caught off-guard during the live broadcast.

A news circulated that Exelby had been taken off the on air roster.

Later on, the ABC released a statement insisting Exelby’s lack of future news reading shifts had nothing to do with the events of the weekend.
